Monumental Inscriptions at Colvend Churchyard
Inscription 1
In loving memory of William Logan, died at Burnside, Colvend, 10th Sept. 1904, aged 66 years. William, his son, died 28th May 1878, aged 1 years & 10 months. Andrew, his son died 15th Sept. 1882, aged 8 months. Eliza Jane, his daughter, who died at Dumfries Infirmary, 22nd Sept. 1908, aged 19 years. Also Andrew, his son who died 10th Dec. 1936, aged 53 years. Mary McCartney, wife of the above, who died at Craigenveoch, Glenluce, 27th Sept. 1940, aged 91 years.

In memory of Wee Jeanie, the beloved child of James & Jane Anderson, who died at Barnbarroch, 24th May 1900, aged 14 months.

In loving memory of William Shennan, died at Auchenhill, 13th June 1861. Barbara Campbell, his wife, died at Auchenhill, 16th Jan. 1877. Mary, their daughter, died at West Auchensheen, 11th April 1864. George their son, died at Boreland, 9th December 1876. John Shennan, died at Bareleys, 12th March 1914. Agnes McMinn, his wife, died at Boreland, 24th Oct. 1880. Jane their daughter died in infancy. Agnes their daughter, died at Manchester, 12th December 1892. Eliza Robinson, his second wife, died at Boreland, 27th August, 1908. George & Marion, their children, died in infancy, at Boreland.

In memory of Mary Campbell, wife of John Brown in Glebe of Southwick, who died 17th of Sept'r 1846, aged 76 years. Also John Brown, who died at Powbraid, 8th Nov’r. 1869, aged 97 years.

In memory of the family of Samuel Smith and Elizabeth McKie, in Kirkland, Colvend.
Margaret Lowden Smith, born 1791, died 19th January 1867. John Smith, born 1793, died 22nd April 1874. David Smith, born 1795, died 6th September 1854. William Smith, born 1797, died 27th December 1820. Thomas Lowden Smith, born 1st July 1799, died (blank). Samuel Smith, born 1801, died 24th April 1862. Adam Smith, born 1803, died (blank). James Smith, born 1805, died 1808. A son, born 1807, died eight days old. James Smith, born 1809, died (blank).
‘Unveil thy bosom, faithful tomb,
Take this new treasure to thy trust,
And give these sacred relics room,
A while to slumber in the dust.’

To the memory of Adam Mackie who died 2nd May 1775, aged 15, Thomas Mackie who died 22nd Aug. 1775, aged 13, Euphemia Mackie who died 23rd Sept. 1775, aged 22, and William Mackie who died 16th Sept. 1775, aged 17 years. Children of Thomas Mackie and Margaret Loudon. Also Margaret Nay, mother of the said Tho's Mackie, who died March 1776, aged 82 years. And Mary, their daughter, who died 15th April 1785, aged 15 years. John, their son, died at Berwick-upon-Tweed, 22nd March 1789, aged 33 years. Here lies the said Margaret Loudon who died 18th May 1789, aged 62 years. And David Mackie, their son, who died at Savannah-la-Mar in the year 1794, aged 30 years. Also the above Thomas Mackie, who died 13th July 1798, aged 70 years. Also Elizabeth Mackie, spouse to injured Samuel Smith, who died 18th July 1824, aged 58. Also the said Samuel Smith, who died 7th Jan'y 1838, aged 75 years.

In memory of John Henderson, who died at Kirkland, 3rd Oct’r. 1775, aged 50 years. Margaret Thomson, his spouse, died 26th Sept. 1823, aged 88 years. William Henderson, their son died at sea, April 1785, aged 25 years. John Henderson, died at Kirkland, 19th June 1841, aged 82 years. Jane Brown, his spouse, died 1st October 1839, aged 79 years. And their children: James died 4th July 1795, aged 6 weeks. Margaret died 15th June 1797, aged 4 years. Mary died 25th July 1797, aged 1 year. Elizabeth died 17th Aug’t. 1799, aged 1 year. Robert died 3rd Feb’y. 1814, aged 25 years. William died 16th Nov'r 1814, aged 11 years. John, died 10th April 1815, aged 24 years.
Inscription 8
In loving memory of Jane Halliday, wife of John Wilson, died at Horden Hall, Castle Eden, Co. Durham, 1st June 1890, aged 58 years. The above John Wilson, died at Upper Barnbarroch, 22nd March 1893, aged 62 years. ‘I know that my redeemer liveth.'

In loving memory of William, eldest son of James and Agnes Jamieson, who died at Damhead, Colvend, 10th August 1891, aged 21 years. David their son, died at Boundary Cottage, 16th Jan. 1905, aged 26 years. Agnes Roan, wife of James Jamieson, who died at Boundary Cottage, 12th December 1906, aged 60 years. The above James Jamieson, who died at Ewesdale, Uphall, West Lothian, 1st Jan. 1922, aged 80 years, and who is interred in the west side of this churchyard. Also Robert John, son of James and Agnes Jamieson, who died at Bournemouth, 1st July 1957, aged 82 years. Wm. Jamieson, father of the above J. Jamieson, died at Boundary Cottage, 3rd April 1903, aged 78 years.
Inscription 10
Side 1. Here by his own desire, are deposited the remains of James Gibson, late of Kelton Esq., formerly merchant in Virginia. The only son of the Rev. Mr Luke Gibson and Marion Gilchrist, he died A.D. 1786, aged 59. Possessed of a character which by its singular worth and goodness, procured him the unfeigned respect, and the warm approbation of all who knew him.
Side 2. The Rev. Mr John Watson, died Dec’r. 29th 1724, aged 46. Distinguished, piety, modesty & gravity of manners marked him out for the sacred office. A due measure of learning & knowledge, directed by a sound judgement, excellently fitted him to instruct & reform. With unwearied assiduity & singular fidelity, he wholly employed himself in the duties of his function. Nor was he more remarkably zealous in his labours, than truly successful in improving those committed to his care. Dying he left it doubtful whither in him Colvend lost a more faithful & useful pastor, or society a more peaceful and acceptable member.
Side 3. Religion without affection and the highest regard for sacred things. Great severity of manners, tempered with real goodness and a charitable opinion of others. Remarkable prudence and discression in the conduct of life, all eminently while living concurred to form the true character and render grateful the memory of a worthy person here interred. Marion Gilchrist, first the wife of Mr John Watson, afterwards of Mr Luke Gibson, Ministers of this Parish. She died Febr. 15th 1751, in the 58 year of her age.
Side 4. The Rev. Mr Luke Gibson, here interred, died at (illegible) A.D. 1760. After having officiated thirty five years as the minister of this parish. To a quickness of natural parts, and an uncommon study and knowledge of the Holy Scriptures in their original language, were added in him punctuality and zeal in discharging the duties of his sacred office, which with his genuine piety, fineness of mind and frankness of manners rendered him dear to his flock. Dilexil docuit volvit superavit adivit pierides populum biblia damna deum.
Inscription 11
In loving memory of John Joseph McQueen, died 9th Dec. 1909 aged 40 years. His wife Flora Jane McBain, died 1st Oct. 1952, aged 79 years. Also their daughter Flora Jane McQueen died 8th June 1974, aged 73 years.

In memory of James Carter Parker who died in the Parish of Tylehurst, Berkshire, on the 24th July 1839, aged 26 years. Walter Parker who died at Tarrillian on the 9th July 1841 aged 22 years. Margaret Parker who died the 26th October 1843, aged 28 years. Thomas Parker who died 6th March 1849 aged 68 years. Margaret Carter, his wife, who died 4th of December 1851, aged 64 years. William Parker who died 13th March 1860, aged 45 years. Margaret Parker Jr. who died 7th September 1860, aged 2 years 10 months. Thomas Parker, grandson of Thomas Parker Sr. died at Dalbeattie 1st Feb'y 1878 aged 6 months.
Inscription 13
In memory of Catherine Paterson, wife of James Campbell, Fairgirth, who died 27th October 1846, aged 46 years. Also the said James Campbell, who died at Barlocco, 22nd April 1862, aged 62 years.
Inscription 14
In loving remembrance of The Rev. Edward J.O. Jack, 1906-1972. Minister of the Parish of Colvend and Southwick 1955 - 1972, and formerly of Laurencekirk, and of Newcraighall. He did justly, he loved mercy, and he walked humbly with his God. It is to life, and not to death, that our beloved go.

In memory of Robert Campbell, who died at Dalbeattie, 15th February 1874, aged 65 years. Janet Dickson, his wife, who died at Cluny, Terregles, 19th April 1886, aged 76 years. Robert Campbell, who died at Auchenhay on 8th Dec’r. 1849, in the 9th year of his age. George Campbell, who died there on 10th June 1851, in the 17th year of his age. Adam Campbell, who died at Dumfries, 15th September 1883, aged 44 years. Also James, son of the above, who died at Dalbeattie, 16th Sep. 1890 aged 55 years. Capt. George Campbell, son of the above who was drowned crossing the Nassau River, January 1894 in his 40th year. Capt. John Campbell, son of the above, who was drowned, with his sons, George and Ernest near Perth, Western Australia, August 1907, in his 64th year.

In memory of Alexander Clark, who died suddenly in Liverpool, 19th Jan’y. 1909, aged 56 years. Elizabeth Charters, widow of above, died at Barnbarroch Village, 27th April 1925, aged 73 years. Janet Charters, daughter of above, died at Barnbarroch Village, 5th Dec’r. 1924, aged 45 years.

Kennedy. This walnut tree was planted in memory of Thomas, and his wife Nettie, late of Fairfield, Kippford.

In memory of my dearly loved brother Edward J.O. Jack, minister of Colvend and Southwick 1955-1972. H.C. Redish, Kippford.
Inscription 17
In memory of William Murray, who died at Lochhouse, 10th Nov’r. 1881, aged 80 years. Sarah Campbell, his wife who died at same place, 7th Dec’r. 1882, aged 81 years. Agnes, their daughter, who died 20th Jan’y. 1880, aged 40 years. James Murray, their son who died at Wishaw, 2nd November 1894, aged 52 years. Agnes Johnstone, his wife, who died at Bengal Cottage, 10th Sept. 1920 aged 59 years. William Murray, their son, who fell in action at Gaza, 19th April 1917, aged 35 years.
Inscription 18
Sacred to the memory of Margaret Cumming, wife of Alexander Rae, of St. Cuthbert Cottage, who died 13th June 1872, aged 58 years. And the said Alexander Rae, who died at Liverpool, 6th December 1891, aged 76 years. Also of the children of the above, Mary, who died 25th March 1852, aged 4 months. Alexander, who died 18th Sept. 1854, aged 5 years. Samuel, who died at Calcutta, 20th May 1860, aged 19 years.
